"What an outstanding book—great easy-to-understand curriculum. We are passing the word/book on to others!"

Robert R.

More than ever, global teachers are looking to restorative practices to replace punitive measures in schools. Here's how you can do the same in yours, and how it can change absolutely everything.

From the very beginning of the book, you'll see evidence of how restorative practice transforms the environments it plays a role in, and the schools we've worked with that directly benefit from its implementation. Then we take you on a guided tour of how to structure, support, and maintain your very own school-wide restorative practice initiative.

Healthier and happier schools produce healthier and happier citizens. Restorative practice lights the way by building trust among students and staff, increasing engagement, and nurturing a supportive environment for everyone.

What is Restorative Practice?

Restorative practice is a system of proactive conflict resolution and management that includes addressing the needs of the victim, the offender, and the affected community. It seeks to promote healthy relationships and encourage association, and to lay the foundation for developing the interpersonal skills and emotional awareness that can turn human conflict into an opportunity for growth and healing.

Whereas punitive practices focus primarily on exclusion, blame, criminalization, and decisive punishment for the wrongdoer (and hopefully justice for the victim), restorative practices are based on inclusion, compassion, and fostering proactive connection and communication. This model has seen great success in many schools around the world, including schools we ourselves have worked with closely such as Youngstown Primary in Tasmania, St. Timothy and St. Jerome Catholic Schools in Edmonton, Alberta, and many others. All of the experience and wisdom we've received over the years from our work has been placed into this book for you.

Restorative Practices will show you how using this process for conflict resolution in schools can transform all your learning environments for the better. Our guide provides a framework for using restorative practice in a conflict situation. It's based on our 6 Ds process of Solution Fluency, a system being used in thousands of schools all over the world for teaching today's students how to independently solve problems and overcome challenges of both an academic and personal nature.

In Restorative Practices, you'll learn about core philosophies, myths and facts about RP, understanding its benefits and limitations, and what to expect and prepare for with your own restorative practice initiative.

And that's just the beginning. You'll also be making use of facilitator and participant worksheets, practice scenarios for discussion and field testing, administrative guidelines for assessing and revising your school or district RP program, debriefing questions, and much more.
